Reading is a habit that cannot be enforced without enticing. Coercing your child to read is a definite kill-joy. Intelligent children are by nature active and wanting to explore the world. Hence their hyperactivity.
Instead of going to the bookshop and amassing books that finally end up in the storeroom, consider instead the National Library facilities. With a book-loan ratio of 6 books for three weeks on a nominal membership, you can be certain that you will not only save on purchases but also entice your child into a lifelong habit of reading.
Benefits of taking your children to the library
When you are at the library, try not to dictate what your child should read. By allowing your child to select his favourite genres, you are indeed encouraging him to read what he likes and develop his love for reading. Never mind if your child picks up a book full of pictures with few words. He is likely to ask what is in the picture. That is when you can encourage him to scan the words around the picture for clues. Never push the 'There, I told you it is better to read" line on them. Be encouraging.
